Support Overview

Regular, in-depth forklift preventive maintenance is necessary to ensure your machines' longevity and efficiency.

When your forklift is out of service, it can affect your bottom line. When they cease working unexpectedly from the blue, they could threaten the operational efficiency of an entire facility, rocket expensive maintenance costs, and even cause accidents. That's why it's essential to carry out thorough inspections on your forklift on a regular basis.

The key to reducing your operational costs is being able to prevent incidents that cost you money. The best way to do this is to have an efficient scheduled maintenance program in place. A well-maintained forklift can run for years and save your business money in the long run, not to mention prevent costly accidents. When your employees know the right way to run your operation and prevent downtime, accidents will be minimal. With the proper forklift preventive maintenance checklist, you can ensure your equipment lasts for longer than you might think.

The most basic part of any forklift preventive maintenance program is inspection. This inspection should cover the interior and exterior of your machine, as well as its underside, so you can be sure to identify any parts that need attention. Each time your forklift is inspected, you can catch problems before they become major issues, saving you both time and money. When you're looking for a reliable supplier of forklift parts and equipment, however, make sure your supplier is able to provide you with a comprehensive inspection program.

While all companies want to make sure their machinery is running properly, yours must be able to withstand the test of time. That means making sure it's properly maintained when it comes into contact with the real world. Take a look at your sales floor after an afternoon of heavy lifting. Are the shelves packed with products, or are they empty and ready for inspection? If you don't inspect your forklift on a regular basis, you could have a problem on your hands before you even get started.

Another thing that your forklift preventive maintenance check list will address is the condition of its tires. Tires and other equipment wear out in a variety of ways, so you need to make sure they're in good condition and in top shape at all times. In addition to inspecting the tires, you should also take care of all other components on the vehicle. Check for visible damage, such as paint chips, abrasions, cracks or other imperfections. Some of these issues can be repaired, while others will require replacement, so make sure to check your entire fleet of vehicles for signs of trouble.

Your forklift preventive maintenance program should include inspections, repairs and adjustments, as well as changes in tire pressure and the amount of oil in the tank. By addressing all of these issues, you'll find that your trucks will run more smoothly, have smoother operation and be safer overall. By taking a proactive approach to forklift maintenance, you can reduce the number of tickets and injuries you encounter in the course of operating your forklift. And by making sure your equipment works right the first time, you'll be able to effectively move your loads in no time, allowing you to get right back to work and meet your customers' needs.

Why switch from as needed to an embedded mechanic?

If you the customer are regularly calling for equipment service and repair, you can save a considerable amount of money by contracting an on-site mechanic. Labor rates go from variable and at a premium for on call service to a fixed lower price once in contract. Fixed costs are easier to budget for and can be accurately projected for years.

Various types of maintenance contracts exist and can be tailored to best support the customers business practices. Two of the most popular are fixed labor +parts/ materials and full general maintenance contract (G.M.C). Fixed Labor + cost of parts/materials means that the Labor will always equal the agreed upon amount, how ever the parts will be billed to the customer as consumed at the service providers cost of purchase + the agreed upon markup percentage. One advantage of this over a full G.M.C is that you can forecast your labor cost precisely and will only spend money on the specific parts you need at that time.

A full G.M.C is a contract that uses a fixed labor amount and takes the average of all parts used in a typical month to give the customer a fixed monthly payment. This option is only available if the service provider has access to enough historical data on the customer’s monthly fleet spend to accurately predict total cost of operation. G.M. C’s benefit to the customer is its predictability, you know what you will spend every month.
